How to apply for an IELTS Test

Important information - Please note that no applications can be considered or processed if any of the listed below is missing:

  • Application form fully completed including signature at the back of the form
  • 2  recent (not older than six months) passport-sized photographs
  • a photocopy of a Passport or a National Identity Card (NI - EU nationals only)
  • Payment: a cheque or postal order payable only to Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College or debit card payment form
  • You must indicate a second test date choice as during the high season we are often no able to accommodate your preferred date


1. Choose a date and venue

Our test centre uses three campuses these are based in Acton, Ealing and Hammersmith.
Check to see if there are still places available for the date you want. During the summer, dates can be full a month before the test, so remember to put a second choice date on the application form.
The deadline for receiving application forms is normally one week before the test, but we often accept them even until Thursday 7pm before the test – (subject to availability).
Important – Please specify the order of preference for the test venue from 1 – 3 as instructed on the application form and we will do our best to accommodate your request.

2. Fill in an application form

  • Download an application form (PDF, 720KB)
  • Email us at ielts@wlc.ac.uk or call freephone on 08000 344 015 or  020 8231 6326 ext 6551 and we will send you an application pack
  • Pick up a form from any reception at our campuses “ Acton, Hammersmith, Ealing, and Southall, pick up the information pack with the application form (Remember to bring 2 passport photos) or come to the College Information Centre at Hammersmith Campus

3. How to pay

PLEASE NOTE: The fee for the test is £115 in 2011. The fee for the test is £125 in 2012.

Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College“ please enclose the fee with your application form and send it to the following address:

You can also email scanned copies of the application form (please ensure you attach two passport size photos to the application form before scanning it) a copy of you passport or National ID (European countries only) and the debit card payment form to ielts@wlc.ac.uk

4. Identification Documents

On the day of the test you must have your passport or national identity card (NI – EU National Only) with you. You will not be allowed to sit the test without the correct document.
If you are sending your passport to an embassy or to the Home Office, you must first get a verified copy of your passport made.
There are two ways to have a copy verified:

  1. You can have your passport copy verified by a certified solicitor.
  2. We can verify your passport copy, but to do this we must see the original passport. You will need to come to our Acton Campus with your passport, before the date of your test.

If your passport is already with the Home Office, you will need to call the Home Office and request them to release the passport for the day.

Without your original passport or a verified copy, you will not be allowed to sit the test.

5. Block bookings

Colleges and schools wishing to send groups of candidates t o us on a specific date can make a block booking in advance. Application forms should be received at least 2 weeks before the test date. Colleges can arrange to be invoiced for their candidates test fee.

6. Cancellations and transfers

Cancellations and transfers are normally only possible if they are requested more than 5 weeks before the test date (we charge £25 admin fee). Candidates who fail to attend the test are not entitled to a refund (unless you can provide medical evidence within 7 days of the test date to confirm your illness or sickness).

All cancellations and transfers must to be applied for in writing. Please email your completed form to ielts@wlc.ac.uk or by post to our IELTS Administrator.

7. How will I know that I have been accepted?

Once we have received your application form with the photographs and the payment, we will send you a confirmation letter with details of the test date, time and how to get here. You must bring this confirmation letter with you on the day of the test.

8. When will I get my Test Result Form (TRF)?

TRFs are posted on the Friday, 2 weeks after the test.

9. What if I am not happy with my results?

You can request an ‘Enquiry on Results; (EOR). You must send us your TRF with a £60 deposit (cash or postal order only). If your result is changed you get a new TRF and your deposit is refunded. This can take up to two months – It is often quicker to take the test again.
