How to apply for an IELTS Test

Apply online:
You can apply and pay for the IELTS test ONLINE only. We no longer accept Paper applications/Payment forms submitted by post or sent to us by email.

Your ID Document:
Please note that after filling in the online application you will need to download a copy of your ID Document. It can be only one of the 3 following documents:

Your International Passport or your European Union National Identity Card or your valid UK Residence Permit.

On the test day, you must bring the ORIGINAL of the same ID document which you downloaded online. You will not be allowed to sit the test without the correct document. Photocopies (including copies verified by a solicitor are NOT accepted).

Important information: If you need to submit your passport for renewal/visa extension/etc and will not have it on the day of the test:  

  • You need to bring your Passport to our office in Acton so we could make our own verified copy IN PERSON BEFORE  you apply for the test online. Our staff members will certify a photocopy of your document. Copies certified by solicitors are not accepted. Please do not apply / pay online until a copy of your Passport is certified by our office.  Please click here for our office opening hours.

Important information: If you have a Letter from the Home Office indicating that a language test (IELTS) is required AND a Certified Passport Copy from the Home Office (with their stamp and a signature)

  • If you have both of the required documents from the Home Office then please bring them to our Acton campus IN PERSON BEFORE applying for your IELTS test. Please also bring any supporting documents or forms of ID with you.  Do not apply / pay online until the documents are certified by our office. Please click here for our office opening hours. Please note that copies of documents certified by solicitors or any other organisations other than the Home Office  are not valid to sit the IELTS test.

Please make sure that your Passport is valid on the day of the test.  

Payment: there is a payment link at the end of the online application process.  Please make sure that you download your ID and read the IELTS Terms and Conditions including the information about cancellations and refunds before you pay for the test online.

How will I know that I have been accepted?
Once you applied online and downloaded all the required documents and paid for the test, we will consider your application and if your preferred date of the test is available, we will send you a confirmation letter via email. Please make sure you put a valid email address and mobile phone number in your online application. Please note that the college reserves the right to move your test to the next available test date or change the venue if your preferred date/campus are fully booked.

Health and Safety:
Before applying for the test please note that the Health and Safety policy of the College states that hoods, baseball caps or any items which cover the face are not permitted on the premises of the College. The face needs to be visible throughout the test day for identity verification. Please note that you cannot bring any sharp objects to the test.

Refunds and transfers:
Refunds and transfers are only possible if they are requested more than 5 weeks before the test date (we charge a £35 administrative fee). Candidates who fail to attend the test are not entitled to a refund (unless medical evidence is provided within 5 days of the test date to confirm that you could not sit the test for medical reasons – please see our FAQs for more information).

When will I get my Test Result Form (TRF)?

You can collect your TRF in person from our IELTS office at our Acton Campus on the 13th day after your test (Wed or Fri) between 10am and 1 pm.  All uncollected results will be posted by 1st class Royal Mail to candidates’ home addresses at 1 pm on the same day. Results can also be checked online, on the same day, with your candidate and your ID numbers at: https://ielts.britishcouncil.org/Results

Block bookings:
Colleges and schools wishing to send groups of candidates to us on a specific date can request a block booking 2 weeks in advance.
Once you have applied online and downloaded your students’ ID documents please send us a list of the names and online enrolment numbers to IELTS@GSPACE.WLC.AC.UK

Colleges and schools may pay online or can arrange to be invoiced for the test fees.

What if I am not happy with my results?
Please note that IELTS Examiners and markers follow strict assessment guidelines and are regularly monitored. The IELTS testing process has the highest quality control procedures. You can apply for an Enquiry on Results within six weeks of the test date and have them re-marked by a senior examiner at the British Council. 

You must pay a £90 enquiry fee, which is fully refunded if your band score changes. 

You will need to provide the following, either by post or in person:

1) A completed Enquiry on Results form (EOR) (available to download here).  
2) Your Test Report Form (the original).
3) A £90 postal order, made payable to EHWLC.

Please note that re-marking requests will take at least 10 weeks to be completed.
