EHWLC Alumni

Business owner and future Quantity Surveyor

I finished the carpentry apprenticeship at EHWLC about 5 years ago. I carried on working at the company where I did my apprenticeship until a few months ago when I set up my own company. I wanted to be my own boss and I’m also about to finish my degree so I can become a Quantity Surveyor.

One of the things I love about my job is that every day is different. You’re not stuck at a desk, you’re out and about on site all the time and there is a variety in the job which means I’m never bored.

The standout moment from my time at EHWLC was winning a SkillBuild award in 2010 and it’s been great coming back to the college to visit. At the time it made me think – 'I can’t be too bad at what I’m doing', and gave me the confidence to go out there and do it. It helped me get to where I am today. It was/is a good construction course with the tutor making sure that you know exactly what you are doing and that you fully understand everything.

My advice to anyone thinking of doing the apprenticeship is to just go for it and give it a go!
