Apprenticeships for Employers

Apprenticeships for Employers

Apprenticeships help you to grow and enhance your business by equipping your workforce with new skills and qualifications. They provide tailored training, targeted to the needs of your workplace, helping you to respond to the ever-changing and challenging landscape.

An apprenticeship combines practical skills alongside a knowledge-based qualification, which is gained through developing a portfolio that matches the needs of your business. With the apprenticeship levy and government incentives, now is the time to hire an apprentice or use apprenticeships to upskill your existing workforce.

At West London College, we provide a holistic package of support for both you and your apprentice, with 20% of training directly from one of our industry expert assessors.

Our training and support programmes include:

  • Teaching delivered by industry-professional assessors
  • Skills development plans relevant to the apprentices’ role
  • On-site additional industry and soft skills training
  • Access to the college’s state-of-the-art training facilities

Apprenticeships for Non-Levy Employers & Small Businesses

As a non-Levy payer, you will have an annual pay bill of under £3 million. Non-Levy-paying employers will pay 5% towards the cost of Apprenticeship training with the government paying the rest (95%).

What Will It Cost?

All apprenticeships at West London College are costed to ensure our employers receive value for money, this is itemised on the apprentice’s commitment statement (signup paperwork). This price is agreed with the employer as the upper limit of the costs associated with the apprenticeship training, however, when we look at the qualifications and experience of the apprenticeship we may reduce this price further.

Small Employer Incentive

The government recognised that smaller employers have historically played a vital role in helping young (16-18-year-olds) and disadvantaged people into the workforce – they continue to support small employers to take on younger apprentices so, for employers with fewer than 50 workers, the government will pay 100% of the apprenticeship training costs. In addition, they are extending this offer to small employers who take on a 19 to 24-year-old apprentice who was formerly in care or has a Local Authority Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP).

Additional Payment & Incentives for Hiring a New Apprentice

There are additional payments and incentives for hiring a new apprentice. If your new apprentice is aged 16-18 years old (or 19-24 with an Education Healthcare Plan or as a former looked-after-child) then you may be eligible for an additional payment of £1000. This incentive is paid half at 90 days and half at 1 year.

Apprenticeships for Levy Payers

The Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in 2017, for large employers, and was designed to increase the number of apprenticeships in the UK. Companies with a payroll of more than £3 million per annum pay the levy, which has to be spent on apprenticeship training within 24 months of it entering the account. However, if you don’t use it, you lose it.
