Southall have a go
Over 100 secondary school pupils converged on Southall Community College last week to take part in our latest Have a Go Days organised as part of our apprenticeship programme in partnership with the Berkeley Group and Ealing Council.

The enthusiastic pupils each spent the day learning the basics of bricklaying and plumbing - key skills that west London needs to drive the the extensive development that is taking place and hopefully leading to more young people taking up apprenticeships.

The Berkeley Group’s Southall Waterside development will provide numerous jobs for the bricklayers, plumbers and other tradespeople of the future, and Have a Go Days are a great chance for young people to get their hands dirty and learn some new skills.

The day was very well received by both the pupils and tutors involved. Along with learning construction skills, the students also undertook a full risk assessment, donned personal protective equipment and learnt all about health and safety in the workplace.

Berkeley Group has committed to training 1500 new apprentices between 2016 and 2018, while the UK Government has pledged to have three million apprentices in the UK by 2020. Ealing, Hammersmith and West London’s College is well placed at the heart of west London communities to contribute a number of these apprentices and help train the workforce of tomorrow.

The best way to find out more about apprenticeships and careers in the construction industry is to come along to our Open Days. See wlc.ac.uk/opendays for more information.
