It's been another successful year at the national SkillBuild competition with Building & Construction students Tom O'Byrne taking out the silver medal for carpentry and Joe Needham receiving a Highly Commended award.

SkillBuild is a national competition run by the  Construction Industry Training board and sees young builders and joiners compete in heats from April to June each year ahead of the final. Tom already had form coming into this year’s event, having won a regional gold in 2015 before coming fourth in the national final last year.

This year’s carpentry final saw competitors planning, designing and building a hexagonal spire roof in 19 hours - a challenging task given the limited time available.

“It was good, hard work to get it done on time” Tom says. “It was great to see it all go together”.

Tom was encouraged to enter the event by College tutor Noel Hall, and Tom was full of praise for him. “Noel is brilliant, very helpful and loves his job” he says.

Joe agreed, adding that it was a very enjoyable and challenging event.
