Reading Ahead Celebrates 10 Years

Reading Ahead celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and once again our staff and students embraced the challenge. Each year, the aim is to get people to challenge themselves, engage in reading and try something new. The challenge is simple, pick six books to read and then rate and review them in order to get a certificate. Over 200 people completed the challenge across all of the West London College sites, with many participants reading 12 books!

The Hammersmith & Fulham College prize-giving ceremony took place on Thursday 3 May, opening with live music from students and a motivational speech about the importance of reading by ex-student Anisa Kamara. Awards were presented by Executive Director & Principal, Janet Gardner, and Jacqueline Clarke, Learning Centre Manager who said: “All of the team contributed and the students and staff that participated were great. It was very encouraging to see some participants completing 2 diaries. I appreciate their efforts. Next year, I would love to have more completes. We want everyone to be reading.”

At Southall Community College, an amazing 118 learners completed their reading diaries –  the highest number across the West London College sites. Prizes were awarded by Melanie Rowland, Learning Centre Manager and Charles Nelson, Director of Inclusive Learning and ALS, who congratulated all those who completed the challenge and stressed the importance of reading.

The top prize this year was an Amazon Fire HD8 with Alexa, with Love2Shop gift vouchers awarded to second and third places.
