For students under 19
Our courses & apprenticeships are usually free if you are 18 or under on the 31st of August 2019. Some courses have additional fees for things like materials and travel, which you will need to pay at the start of your course. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support for these costs.
For students aged 19 or over
If you are aged 19 or over you may be required to pay fees. Some courses may be free, depending on your circumstances. Certain Level 3 & 4 courses require you to pay the fee in full or take out an Advanced Learning Loan to pay for your course. Please see our guide to fees for more information.
Students from outside the EU/EEA need to pay the full international fee for their course. Please note, West London College does not offer Tier 4 Visa Sponsorship for students to study in the United Kingdom.
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Applied Science shares the common purpose of helping people to become occupationally ready to take up employment in the applied science sector at the appropriate level. This can follow either directly after achieving the qualification, or via the stepping stone of Higher Education (HE) in university or college. By studying a BTEC Level 3 National, learners develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including essential employability skills, and apply them in real work contexts.
The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Applied Science (Medical Science) is a 90-credit qualification that consists of four mandatory units plus optional units that provide for a combined total of 90 credits Pearson BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Applied Science qualification is equivalent in size to one and a half A levels.
It has been designed to develop a common core of knowledge including:
fundamentals of science
scientific practical techniques
working in the science industry
and scientific investigations and allowing them the opportunity to study in more depth a range of option areas such as:
Biochemistry and biochemical techniques
Industrial chemical reactions
Electrical circuits and their applications
- Physiological investigations
4 - 5 GCSEs grade A - C, including English and Maths and a BB in Double Science. Students with full Level 2 vocational qualifications with an overall Merit/Distinction will be considered alongside 2 GCSEs grade A - C including GCSE English and Maths and a good reference. Some subjects will need GCSE Maths.
Assessment is through assignments, presentations and completion of projects. All units are graded as Pass, Merit and Distinction. Assignments are created by lecturers to enable learners to be able to meet the criteria at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Some learners may wish to gain the qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to a larger or different level 3 programme. All units are internally assessed in the BTEC qualifications. We enable learners to produce evidence in a variety of different forms including, written reports, graphs and posters, along with projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments
Most of our learners progress onto the Extended Diploma with a view to progressing onto Higher Education. Some will seek apprenticeships within the Science Sector and others engage in employment in the Science Industry. You could continue your studies at a University as the extended Diploma in Applied Science is considered equivalent to 3 A Levels by Universities and Employers. You can also continue your studies to gain an HNC or HND to allow you to work within a Science Laboratory.
