Fee Information

Fees indicated are based on the current year (August 2016 to July 2017) and are subject to change next year.

Our further education courses (Entry to Level 3) are usually free if you are 16-18 years old. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support to help with other costs associated with your course such as course materials and travel.

If you are aged 19 or over you may be required to pay fees.

If you are enrolling onto a Level 3 or 4 course and are over 19 years of age the fees may be higher and you will be required to take out an Advanced Learning Loan, please see the guide to fees for more information.

International students will be required to pay the full International course fee.

About this course

Course Content & Structure NB - Please note that this is a Year 1 course. Learners are required to achieve the full BTEC 90 Credit Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design) to be enrolled on the Extended Diploma in Year 2. This course is for you if you are interested in the Graphic Design industry, and in Art & Design. If you are creative, artistic and imaginative and keen to develop your practical and theoretical skills, then this is the course for you.

This is the first year of a vocational two-year course, aimed at students who are keen to develop excellent practical and analytical skills. The course also encourages students to explore and develop their creative and analytical thinking and respond effectively to vocational and realistic industry related Assignment briefs.

During the course students will develop their skills in Drawing and Painting, Typography, Packaging, Mixed Media, Animation, Magazine Design, 3D Design, Advertising and Storyboards. You will also learn about computers in design using industry related software which will include Adobe Photoshop, Adobe In-Design, Adobe Illustrator, and PowerPoint.

On completion of the course, you will achieve a BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design).

NOTE - Students will initially enrol on the 60 Credit Subsidiary Diploma in Art & Design (Graphic Design), and are required to complete all 6 units by the end of Term 2. On successful completion of these units, students will be enrolled onto the full 90 Credit Diploma for Term 3, during which the remaining 3 units will be completed.

Your Study Programme will include the main course, a weekly tutorial, work experience placement/employability skills development and English and Maths as required (see below).

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade A* - C/9 - 4, including English Language and a subject relevant to your chosen area of study. Students with full Level 2 vocational qualifications with an overall Merit/Distinction in Art and Design will be considered alongside 2 GCSEs grade 9 - 4 including GCSE English Language and a good reference.

During interview and enrolment you will need to present a portfolio of work demonstrating your drawing, painting, line and tone observation skills from life (not computer, copied work or manga).

GCSE Maths & English As part of their overall Study Programme, students will also be required to attend L2 Certificate/GCSE Maths classes if they have yet to achieve a GCSE Grade 4 in the subject.

To be accepted onto the course, applicants are required to have achieved a Grade 4 in English Language. NB - In certain circumstances (e.g. overseas applicants) applicant may be accepted without this if they demonstrate the necessary level of literacy in diagnostic testing completed during enrolment. In such cases, students will be required to study GCSE English as part of their Study Programme.

Assessment Method

Student assessment is based on course work, both practical and written. In the second year you will have to undertake a Final Major Project to be assessed externally.

Progression Opportunities

Successful students will obtain a BTEC National Extended Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design) by the end of Year 2. This is equivalent to 3 A levels. Students passing the course with Merit or above can go on to study at University, training or employment. The course prepares students for the world of work in the various fields of Graphic Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Animation, Fashion Design, Illustration, Product Design, Theatre Design and Digital Imaging.

We also offer a full programme of enrichment activities that include visits to relevant exhibitions and galleries.

The course will open up a wide range of creative career opportunities including games designer, animator, graphic designer, photographer, architect, interior designer, illustrator and magazine designer.

Study Methods

You will have 15 hours of timetabled classes each week over four days including a group tutorial with your personal tutor who will support and encourage you throughout the duration of the course.

You will learn in dedicated art and design studios. We also have computer rooms, equipped with industry standard software packages, including Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver and Indesign.
