Fee Information

Fees indicated are based on the current year (August 2016 to July 2017) and are subject to change next year.

Our further education courses (Entry to Level 3) are usually free if you are 16-18 years old. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support to help with other costs associated with your course such as course materials and travel.

If you are aged 19 or over you may be required to pay fees.

If you are enrolling onto a Level 3 or 4 course and are over 19 years of age the fees may be higher and you will be required to take out an Advanced Learning Loan, please see the guide to fees for more information.

International students will be required to pay the full International course fee.

About this course

This course is for you if you wish to gain a professional qualification enabling you to work with children in Day Care, Nurseries, Infant Schools or other related settings, or wish to go on to study at Higher Education.

This is a full time two year level 3 Child Care course. Three days are spent in college and two on work placement. It prepares you to work unsupervised, or in a supervisory capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children's Services.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE A - C grades one being including Maths and English, or Child Care & Education certificate (CCE) Level 2 at Merit, with a Functional Level 2 or equivalent in English or Maths. BTEC 1st Diploma at Merit. Relevant past experience will be considered. At interview applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for working with children.

Before final acceptance onto the course applicants must have a valid Disclosure & Barring Service check (DBS) as required by law for all people working with children.

The course is internally assessed and has two external assessments.

Assessment Method

You will be assessed via a written portfolio and practical observations with children in a variety of settings.

Progression Opportunities

You could continue your studies and go on to Higher Education to gain a degree in Primary Education, Childhood Studies, Psychology or a Foundation Degree or you can work in a nursery as a Child Care worker or become a Nursery Manager. University and employment as qualified Level 3 childcare practitioners in schools and nurseries. You could work as a nursery nurse or primary school teaching assistant. Salaries range from £16,500 up to £28,000 for a managerial position.

Study Methods

You will learn in dedicated classrooms and a range of childcare settings when on work training placements - this will include working with babies.

This is a 2 year course: three days in college and two days in placement.
