Organisations increasingly rely on computer systems in all areas of their operations and decision-making processes. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that IT systems run correctly and are regularly maintained. IT support, or technical support, is a service that provides this kind of support, as well as helping with specific problems with computer technology. IT support technicians may install and configure computer systems, diagnose hardware and software faults, and solve technical and applications problems, either over the phone or in person, and/or monitor and maintain the computer systems and networks of an organisation. Organisations need the IT support to ensure that their digital products, services and systems work effectively.
This qualification is for learners who want to start a career in IT support. This course is for you if you are looking to gain the skills and knowledge to undertake an IT support technician job role. It is an ideal qualification if you are intending to progress directly to employment in IT, or to an IT apprenticeship.
Learners will be required to complete all four units which will include:
- Set Up and Configure Technology Systems;
- Exploring Current and Emerging Technologies;
- Security Protection and Risk Management;
- Working as an IT Support Technician.
All learners will also get a chance to improve their literacy and numeracy to level 2, either with a programme of study that includes GCSE English and Maths, or Functional skills English and Maths. The study programme will include work experience for a week which will enable you to develop your employability skills further as well as study skills where you will complete modules such as Word and Excel to gain the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) qualification.
2-4 GCSEs grade A*-D (including Maths and English, or functional skills at Level 1 in Maths and English), or a BTEC Level 1 Certificate/Diploma with level 1 Functional skills in Maths and English. Successful completion of internal assessment is also required.
The majority of the course will be assessed through vocational tasks and assignments.
There is one external assessment, which contributes 25% of the total qualification. The external assessment for Security Protection and Risk Management unit takes the form of an onscreen test that includes a variety of onscreen item types and allows learners to apply their knowledge to several work-related contexts.
Coursework and online multiple choice test, with the Functional Skills Mathematics and English, or GCSEs are being assessed through controlled exams.
Achieving this qualification will give learners an advantage when applying for a job in IT. The types of role they will be ready for are:
- IT security support technician
- Helpdesk administrator
- IT service desk support
- Customer support technician.
When studied as part of a full study programme, this qualification also gives learners a sound basis to progress further in the IT sector or to a Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC Level 3 qualification in IT, computing or engineering, or a Level 3 digital apprenticeship.
You will learn in dedicated classrooms and IT labs with the latest software and equipment. You will have up to 16 hours of timetabled classes each week including a group tutorial with your personal tutor, who will support and encourage you throughout the duration of the course.
As part of the course employer visits and guest speakers will be arranged to enhance and contextualise your learning.
