Fee Information

Fees indicated are based on the current academic year (2019/20) and are subject to change next year.

For students under 19

Our courses & apprenticeships are usually free if you are 18 or under on the 31st of August 2019. Some courses have additional fees for things like materials and travel, which you will need to pay at the start of your course. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support for these costs.

For students aged 19 or over

If you are aged 19 or over you may be required to pay fees. Some courses may be free, depending on your circumstances. Certain Level 3 & 4 courses require you to pay the fee in full or take out an Advanced Learning Loan to pay for your course. Please see our guide to fees for more information.

International Students

Students from outside the EU/EEA need to pay the full international fee for their course. Please note, West London College does not offer Tier 4 Visa Sponsorship for students to study in the United Kingdom.


About this course

Our Level 2 Extended Certificate in Public Services programme is designed to inspire learners who are interested in developing a career in the public service sector. It will give learners the opportunity to gain a broad knowledge and understanding whilst developing essential skills required to support progression into employment or higher level qualifications in this area.

On this course you will study four core/mandatory units:

  • The Role and Work of the Public Services;
  • Working Skills in the Public Service Sector;
  • Citizenship, Society and the Public Services;
  • Crime and its Effects on Society and Individuals.

In addition you will study optional specialist units which may include:

  • Adventurous Activities in the Public Services;
  • Health, Fitness and Lifestyle for the Public Services;
  • Preparing to Respond to Emergency Incidents;
  • Public Services and Community Protection.

This qualification will form part of a study programme which will include exclusive access to our Sports Academy and Enrichment programme, Maths & English, Tutorial support, Work Experience, and development of employability and study skills. Maths and English is a fundamental element of this study programme and skills in these areas will be embedded into your vocational learning. In addition, if you do not have a grade C in Maths and/or English you will attend a discrete GCSE or Functional Skills class as part of your weekly timetable.

Progression options (further studies/employment) Upon successfully completing this course you will have the opportunity to progress onto a Level 3 qualification in Sport or Public Services which will then allow for progression in Higher Education or an Apprenticeship. Entry Requirements

4 GCSE's grade A*-D (including English and Maths at Grade D or Functional Skills L1 qualifications) or Level 1 Diploma in Sport with Functional Skills L1 in English and Maths Applicants may be asked to sit a literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment and must achieve a minimum of L1. All applicants must successfully pass an academic interview.

Assessment Method

You will be assessed via a range of methods including worksheets, written/oral questions, external tests, projects, reports, presentations and practical observations. You will build a portfolio of evidence as you progress through the course.

Progression Opportunities

BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Public Services You will have the opportunities to undertake additional qualifications through volunteering. Functional Skills - develop skills that will help you in College, work and in your personal and social life. Employment Skills - Improve your opportunities to gain employment, how to approach employers, apply for jobs and conduct yourself in work.

The BTEC Level 1 Extended Certificate in Public Services is intended as a stepping stone to the BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Public Services. This progression will inevitably depend on your performance. There are also opportunities to progress into employment in areas such as public and private security, leisure/health facilities, coaching, sports development, the uniformed services.

Level 3 qualification in Sport or Public Services

Study Methods

You will be required to attend college for approximately 12 hours per week, which will include your subject related sessions along with tutorial, and English & Maths as required. In addition to this you will be expected to undertake independent study to complete tasks, coursework and assessments.

You will study via a range of methods including theory seminars, practical sessions, workshops, and work placements, in dedicated classrooms and high quality facilities which include fully equipped classrooms, a full sized Sports Hall, Exercise Studio and Sports Science Laboratory with state of the art equipment. Some lessons may also occur in the large on-site health and fitness club, which students also have access to free of charge, or at off-site facilities. You will also learn through a range of relevant trips, visits and guest lectures.
