Skillbuild website winners

Skillbuild returned to Acton this week, with West London’s College once again the only College in London asked to host a heat of the prestigious national event.

Students from 16 colleges and training providers took part in the heat, one of 15 held all over the United Kingdom between April and June. The top eight competitors in each of the 15 trades will then go to a three day national final in Birmingham in November.

It was another highly successful heat for our students, particularly in the carpentry and joinery sections where we won every heat. The College also returned to the bricklaying section of the competition for the first time in a number of years.

West London’s College SkillBuild heat winners:

Joe Needham was the favourite going into his event having represented the College at the national event in 2016. He spoke highly of everything he has learnt competing in Skillbuild, saying:

“It’s a great competition, I really enjoyed it again this year. It really helps me learn new skills, and I would recommend it to other young tradespeople.”

Dave Barker, Curriculum Manager for Building & Construction, is a big supporter of SkillBuild and worked tirelessly alongside his team to make it another successful event. Dave said:

“Hosting this event is a big deal for the College and something we take a lot of pride in. The calibre of talent was very high all the way across the board, and the competition is raising standards for students in the Building & Construction industry.

“We’re growing in the number of students who take part each year and it is great to show off our facilities to a wider audience. The national competition (in Birmingham) is an incredible event, and we’re looking forward to some of our young builders and joiners qualifying."
