Hospitality and Catering students from Hammersmith and Fulham College had the opportunity to cater for visitors to Royal Ascot alongside contract catering company, Sodexo. They prepared, cooked and plated 400-500 covers per day of starters, main courses, desserts and afternoon tea for guests in the VIP areas between Tuesday 13 to Friday 17 June.
For the students, having the opportunity to work on such high profile events is key to gaining the experience that their future employers will want.
Denise Charles, Curriculum Manager, said: “I am really proud of the way the students conducted themselves at Royal Ascot. They demonstrated the skills and knowledge they have learnt over the past academic year. They have also shown that they are adaptable to all situations, that they have great interpersonal skills and are able to work well with others in all areas of the hospitality industry.
Anticipated and revered, the days making up Royal Ascot each year are made for socialising as well as horse racing. Long seen as a spectacle of fashion and style, the event holds the world's attention each June. A sense of quality, excellence and luxury sets the scene for the race days, and this must be reflected in the standard of food and drink available, which our students were delighted to be part of.
The students had this to say: “I really enjoyed my time at Royal Ascot. It really gave me an inside opportunity to prepare myself for the catering industry. It made me think about what path I would like to take. The experience made me want to push harder to progress to the level I want to succeed at. I loved working with RARC and I appreciated the honest feedback and constructive criticism I was given.
