Last week our Hospitality & Catering team invited Gary, James and Robbie from Young's and Geronimo pubs to come in and judge a special British themed cooking competition.
Ten of our Level 3 students were given a limited amount of time to make a hearty British pub style dish to impress the judges. The classic meat pie was a popular choice for many of the chefs, but the competition was ultimately taken out by Iza Macedo with a delicious bavette steak with truffle sweet butter carrots.
WINNER: Iza poses with Gary, James and Robbie from Young's and Geronimo pubs.
The judges were extremely impressed by the quality of the dishes with James noting that the skills on show would be transferable to any of their professional kitchens, and Gary saying he was very impressed with how the students worked together and helped each other.
Iza said she had a basic idea of what she wanted to make when she started, but a lot was made up when she arrived:
"I knew what steak I was going to make, but I chose everything else this morning" she said.
"It was a really enjoyable competition and great to work with students from other groups. It was an amazing opportunity and I learnt so much".
Iza is a familiar face around the College, taking part in our Nestle Toque D'or earlier this year:
Our level 3 cookery students are already making restaurant quality meals with several having already found employment before the end of their course. Find out how to join them and get the best start in a career as a chef at wlc.ac.uk/courses/hospitality-catering
