The first group of residents from Catalyst Housing Association have completed an entry level IT qualification with Evolve Learning Group.
The City & Guilds Start IT (iTQ) qualification is a four week course which was delivered by Evolve’s Masood Hakim at Catalyst’s Southall Day Centre and focused on the very basics of using a computer.
The course included elements including computer security and privacy, the use of mobile technology, word processing and spreadsheets, as well as the basics of using the internet.
To make the course more accessible, a temporary creche was set up with support from Catalyst to help parents out while they studied.
Eight students completed the course, and for most, it was the first time they had seriously used a computer before. The training further builds on Evolve’s strong relationship with Catalyst who use West London College as a training provider for apprentices.
“I never had a computer” explained Mahjabeen, one of the students. “The course was very good and I enjoyed it a lot. I’m now hoping to get a computer in the Boxing Day sales so I can practice some more.”
With so many everyday tasks now completed entirely online, a lack of computer knowledge can be isolating. Badia, one of the students, said the course had definitely given her more confidence.
“I have learnt a lot and won’t have to ask my kids as much for help. Masood was very patient with me and spoke in plain and easy language. We have all enjoyed the course and will keep practicing our skills in the future.”
