West London College has been announced as a Google Reference College.
The announcement was made by Google Education at the Google FE College Leadership Symposium held at Google HQ today and firmly positions us as a leading further education college at embedding technology for learning in the country.
Reference status is awarded to a college that uses G Suite for Education in exemplary and innovative ways. This means that WLC are now a reference point for other schools and colleges looking for advice on best practice.
West London College has seen organic growth in its use of technology since migrating student emails to Gmail eight years ago. Since that time the College has embarked on a journey to maximise the use of technology to improve teaching, learning and assessment, and has seen organic growth in the use of apps to boost the learner experience.
The college was also recognised for its innovative work in supporting student Experience when we won the Times Educational Supplement Award for Outstanding use of Technology in teaching, learning and assessment in early 2017.
Our CEO Garry Phillips was at the College Leadership Symposium for the launch and said:
“This is another great recognition of the innovative work and partnerships that the College and staff have in ensuring that we continue to provide the relevant and up to date skills for our students, enabling them to be progress onto further, higher study and or employment and by ensuring we continue to meet the skills needs within London especially the Digital and Technical Skills.”
Today, the vast majority of our students are using Google Classroom to submit work, ask questions and get feedback in hours - all considerably faster and more effectively than using traditional methods of assessment which could take weeks to complete.
Students and teachers are also using a wide range of other Google tools on a daily basis, and all College students on level 2 and 3 courses get to make use of Chromebooks to help with their studies along the way.
Transforming the College through technology has been achieved through an ongoing project called Going Google: The West London Way, led by Wendy Peskett, our Google Experience Manager. Wendy said:
“WLC has had a long history of outstanding use of technology, and our recognition as a Google Reference College is the second time this year we have been recognised for the innovative work and dedication of the staff. Earlier this year we won the TES FE Award for Outstanding use of Technology in teaching, learning and assessment for our use of Google and now we are a Google Reference College. I have been delighted to see this transformation.”
Liz Sproat, Head of Education Europe for Google also added her regards for our achievement:
"Congratulations to West London College for achieving the status of Google Reference College in the UK. College leadership is ambitious about their goals for students and teachers and have used our technology as a tool to enable them. The results have been impressive!"
