supported internship fair 1
The annual West London Supported Internship Fair in partnership with the West London Alliance was held at Hammersmith & Fulham College yesterday. Supported internships are open to young people aged 18-25 with moderate learning disabilities who have aspirations to enter the world of work, and the event brought together a range of employers who offer these internships to give young people the chance to meet with them and find out more information. The event was a huge success with over 200 students attending and getting a chance to sit down with a range of employers including hospitals, hotels and public service providers.

The event also included keynote speakers Helen Brooks, Post-16 SEND Adviser and Jo Baty Children & Families Implementation Act), as well as speeches by Nadia Khan, Interim Head of Inclusive Learning and Janet Gardner, Principal and Executive Director of Ealing at Hammersmith & West London’s College.

Supported internships are of huge benefit to both young people and the employers themselves. Public Health England were one of the employers on hand and their representative Emily Taylor shared the organisation's enthusiasm for supported internships.

“The feedback and development of our supported interns has been remarkable. Our team say the students bring incredible benefits to the organisation and we’re always telling other employers about how good Project SEARCH is. It’s one of the most important things we do as an organisation.”

Alican Reilly and Raja Hollins are Project SEARCH supported interns at Sofitel London, and both were on hand to share their experiences with the next round of potential students.

“I really enjoy it, it’s good to meet new people and get to know about Sofitel. Project Search is good for young people and I recommend it” said Alican. Raja echoed this sentiment, saying “it’s great fun and a great experience. I want more young people to experience supported internships.”

The event was a huge success and we received extremely positive feedback from everyone involved. We would like to give a big thank you to employers who exhibited included Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, Sofitel London Heathrow, London Heathrow Marriott Hotel, Charing Cross Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, St George's Hospital, Glaxosmithkline, Public Health England, LOréal Head Office Hammersmith, Hammersmith And Fulham Council, Hounslow Council, Dorsett Shepherds Bush and TFL.
