Beth Woodgate young chef winner
On Thursday 23 February, we hosted Hammersmith & Fulham Council's Young Chef of the Year Final in our TASTE Restaurant for the ninth year in a row.

The Young Chef of the Year competition brings together some of the brightest young cooking talent from around the Borough. This year, the finalists had one hour to prepare two courses from fresh ingredients on a budget of £7.

The event featured an esteemed guest list and judging panel, with professional chefs from the Dorset Hotel, Jamie’s Cooking School, Wagamama and the River Cafe being joined by local councillors and staff from local businesses including Westfield and Olympia. We were also excited to have the awards presented by Councillor Mercy Umeh - the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham.

The winner of the Young Chef of the Year was Burlington Danes student Beth Woodgate, aged 15, with her dishes of seafood broth followed by pan fried duck with orange jus and turned vegetables. As well as the trophy, her prize included a Westfield gift card, a Wagamama gift bag and a selection of cookbooks from the judges.

Beth said: "This award means a lot to me. I was stressing a lot before the competition, but once I was in the kitchen all my nerves went away".

Latifah Atkinson whose local business Bake that Cake was supported as a start-up with help from The Prince's Trust, was also present at the final to help inspire the young chefs.

She spoke of her experience of starting her food business and baked an amazing cake in the shape of Chef's hat for the event.

We were incredibly impressed with the high level of cooking from all participating students. We look forward to hosting Young Chef of the Year again in 2018 for the competition's 10th Anniversary!
