Foundation Learning students on our Bridge to Mainstream course took part in an Applied Science taster workshop at Ealing Green College on Thursday 4 May. The workshop was facilitated by second-year Applied Science Level 3 students Qais, Delina and Roqiya, and supervised and supported by their teacher Lila Djellout and science technician Herman Thomas. The taster workshop was an enrichment activity and will also help the students decide if they want to progress to a science course next year.
Lila described the four tasks she wanted everyone to complete. Working in teams, the foundation learning students were asked to find the pH value of a variety of household liquids such as vinegar, baking soda and orange juice; identify organs in the human body, create a healthy meal by choosing foods from each of the main groups, and calculating the calories in a drink of their choice that they usually have.
Lila said: “We organised the taster session as part of our Science Society Club, as we wanted to provide an enrichment activity for our Bridge to Mainstream students and for Applied Science Level 3 students at the college.”
The applied science students Qais Attaallah, Roqiya Al-Aqool and Delina Kidane, interacted with each team of foundation learners to help them fulfil the tasks.
Our foundation learning courses have been designed for students who need support to bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be. Bridge to Mainstream offers a tailored programme based on each student’s starting point, learning style and what they are looking to progress to. Foundation learning students develop personal and employability skills, giving them the confidence to take their next steps.
Liam Sinott, Course Leader for Foundation Learning explained: “For a variety of reasons some students may have missed out on some of the important skills they need in their education. We can help them to achieve these in foundation learning. Taster sessions like these help my students focus on what they want to do after Bridge to Mainstream.”
Bridge to Mainstream learner Suchanan Tadi said: “The science taster today was a fun experience and I enjoyed working in a team with some of my classmates.”
