Computing Student Meets King Charles

West London College student Jacquam Tobin had the distinguished honour of meeting King Charles III and Ealing Council Leader Peter Mason, during a royal visit to the Ealing Christmas Market last week. Serving as a youth ambassador for the local charity Descendants, Jacquam, currently in his second year of ICT Digital Skills Level 3 studies at Hammersmith & Fulham College, was introduced to the King in recognition of his role.

The Christmas market at the Ealing Broadway shopping centre invited Descendants, an influential community organisation dedicated to enhancing the future of Ealing to present their work to the King as previous recipients of The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (formerly The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service). During the royal greeting, Jacquam had the privilege of shaking His Majesty’s hand, representing both West London College and Descendants.

The King chatted to Jacquam and showed a keen interest in Descendants, commending the crucial work they undertake. During their conversation, King Charles also inquired about Jacquam’s education and learned of his plans to study Computer Science at either Westminster or London Metropolitan University after completing his course at WLC.

Reflecting on his moments with King Charles, Jacquam said: “It was a very cool and enjoyable, although pretty unreal experience!”

Descendants, established in 1993 by East Acton residents, has been a catalyst for supporting the achievements, confidence, and self-esteem of local African and Caribbean children and young people in West London.

Denise Charles, Head of Service Industries at West London College and Chair of the Descendants organising committee, said: “It is an honour to be Chair for Descendants, to be able to see the young people of Ealing learn about African and Caribbean history, culture and heritage through arts, music and dance – things that are not currently on the school curriculum in the Ealing borough.”
