Students from West London College’s Health & Social Care and Sports Coaching courses had an exciting opportunity to go behind the scenes at Sky Sports Studios in Osterley, where they immersed themselves in the world of sports broadcasting and digital media.

During their visit to Sky Up Academy, students stepped into a bespoke XR studio, using cutting-edge digital technology to create their own news presentations on mental health and wellbeing. Taking on real-life media roles, they worked with industry experts to produce professional-level news reports—an experience that brought learning to life and supported their coursework.

Beyond exploring mental health and wellbeing, and how they would put their thoughts into a professional production, the visit offered students a chance to enhance their Creativity, Listening, Speaking, and Teamwork skills – key components of the Skills Builder Partnership Universal Framework. Meeting Sky employees and exploring career pathways in the creative industries further inspired students to think about their futures.
Darren Morgan, WLC’s Programme Lead for Sports & Uniformed Public Services, reflected on the experience: “This was an incredible opportunity for our students to step into a professional media environment, develop digital and communication skills, and gain a real insight into the creative industries. Seeing them work together, grow in confidence, and produce high-quality content was fantastic. Experiences like this make a real impact on their learning and future aspirations. Visits like these enhance our curriculum, giving students the confidence to be creative, be curious, and embrace new opportunities.”
