Applied Science - Level 2

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course includes a series of practical and theoretical topics from biology, chemistry and physics giving you enough depth and breadth to continue onto a career or course in many fields of science.

You will study 8 mandatory and 4 optional units including:

  • Principles of Science,
  • Biology and Our Environment,
  • Energy and Our Universe,
  • Chemical Analysis and Detection,
  • The Living Body,
  • Applications of Chemical Substances,
  • Science in Medicine,
  • Scientific Skills.

You will be expected to

  • take part in work experience,
  • submit assignments on time, and
  • take part in self-directed study at the allotted times.

You will need to ensure that your attendance is above 90% at all times.

Learners will take part in Industry visits, field trips and visiting lecturing guest talks.

All learners will also get a chance to improve their literacy and numeracy to level 2, either with a programme of study that includes GCSE English and maths, or Functional Skills English and maths.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science or
  • a relevent Science Level 1 qualification, with Functional Skills Level 1 or above in English and maths

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them

A satisfactory reference may also be required.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Assessment is an integral part of the overall learning process and our student-centered approach aims to promote and enhance creativity, analytical thinking, research skills, and effective communication skills.

You will be assessed through:

  • project work,
  • written assignments,
  • in-class tests,
  • presentations, and
  • observations.

Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and you will receive an overall grade for the qualification. Some mandatory units will be assessed by external exams.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

From this qualification, you could:

  • Progress onto a Level 3 Science course,
  • Study another Level 2 vocational qualification in another subject area to complement this course
  • Apply for a Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeship.
  • Gain employment in science-related roles such as an entry-level science technician.
STUDY METHODS

You will be taught by specialist teachers, within science labs. Learning will take place via group projects, student portfolios, and class participation, field trip, practical sessions, visits. Learning will take place through experiments, case studies, research, interactive tools, blended and flipped learning.

You will have up to 16 hours of timetabled classes each week including a group tutorial with your personal tutor, who will support and encourage you throughout the duration of the course. You will also gain exposure to organisations relating to science through external visits, guest speakers, and attending exhibitions. You will also be offered the opportunity to take part in enrichment programmes. The College offers tutorial and welfare services to provide support and guidance whenever it is needed. The Colleges Learning Resource Centre provides excellent facilities for private study and includes access to computers, an extensive library, and quiet study areas.

Mode of attendance: three to four days a week. You will also have to complete some independent work. As part of the course, employer visits and guest speakers will be arranged to enhance and contextualise your learning.

This course is offered at Ealing Green college.

FEES

If you will be aged 16 to 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your studies and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course will be free.
