Functional Skills in English is designed to help you develop essential reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that are useful in everyday life, the workplace and further education.
You will work towards a nationally recognised Level 1 qualification that demonstrates your ability and builds your confidence in using English effectively.
On this course, you will:
- Develop your reading skills by learning how to understand, question and analyse a wide range of written texts, including articles, advertisements, emails and reports.
- Learn to plan, structure and write longer pieces of your own writing, such as letters, formal and informal emails, blogs and reports, tailored to different audiences and purposes.
- Improve your grammar, punctuation and spelling, helping you to communicate more clearly and accurately in both formal and informal writing.
- Practise and build your speaking and listening skills by taking part in discussions, giving short presentations and communicating effectively in real-life and formal situations.
This course will help boost your self-confidence and motivation, especially if you have been away from education for a while. The skills you gain will not only support your personal development but also help you in the workplace and prepare you for further study.
Daytime classes are available at Hammersmith & Fulham College, Ealing Green College and Southall Community College. We also have evening classes available at both Hammersmith & Fulham College and Ealing Green College.
You will have an assessment with our course teachers at enrolment to check your current level of literacy.
You will be regularly assessed during your course and receive feedback to help you develop the skills required for the exams.
Speaking and listening is assessed in classes, whilst reading and writing is assessed through exams.
Once you have successfully completed Functional Skills at Level 1, you may be able to progress to GCSE English.
You will enhance your skills with a mixture of:
