During this course you may study the following topics:
- Atomic structure and the periodic table,
- Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter,
- Quantitative chemistry,
- Chemical changes,
- Energy changes,
- The rate and extent of chemical change,
- Organic chemistry,
- Chemical analysis,
- Chemistry of the atmosphere and
- Using resources.
Throughout the course you are expected to carry out practical experiments to develop your investigational skills.
You will need:
- GCSE English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above, or Functional Skills level 2 accepted
- Equivalent qualifications or experience accepted
- If you do not have any formal qualifications, you must pass an entry exam.
- To successfully complete an interview with a course tutor
- A satisfactory reference may be required.
This qualification is linear which means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course.
Mock exams and revision sessions will be conducted through the year.
Two end of year exams will take place in May / June.

How it is assessed
- Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Foundation and Higher Tier
- 100 marks
- 50% of GCSE
Questions
- Multiple choice, structured, closed short answer and open response.
Upon successful completion of this one-year programme you may be able to study on an Access to HE course.
- You will learn in the science laboratories with experienced and enthusiastic tutors.
- The Chemistry GCSE is taught once a week for 3 hours.
