Motor Vehicle Maintenance - Level 1

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Our Motor Vehicle Level 1 courses takes a practical approach to learning, using visual questioning techniques to keep you engaged and interested.

You’ll have the flexibility to choose areas where you want to develop your knowledge and skills, including:

  • Health and safety practices in vehicle maintenance
  • Good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • Tools, equipment, and materials for vehicle maintenance

You’ll also have the opportunity to achieve Level 2 units, which can help you progress to an IMI Level 2 Certificate (VRQ) and move toward your chosen career path.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

We recommend that you have:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including English and maths
    or
    Functional Skills in English and maths at Entry Level 3

At enrolment, you will have an interview with our course tutors to ensure the course is right for you. You may also need to complete an initial assessment in English and maths, depending on your grades.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Your assessments are designed to match what you’ve learned. All your work will be marked by your tutors, giving you a chance to show off your skills in real-world situations.

You’ll build a portfolio of your coursework, showcasing your progress throughout the course. Plus, you’ll get hands-on experience through practical assignments and receive feedback from your tutors. Some elements, such as Functional Skills, may also have external exams.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

After completing this course, you'll be well-prepared for further study in the motor vehicle industry, such as a study programme at Level 2.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Units covered can include:

  • Introduction to the retail automotive maintenance and repair industry
  • Spark ignition engine systems, components and operation
  • Compression ignition engine systems, components and operation
  • Steering and suspension systems components and maintenance (4 wheels or more)
  • Vehicle braking systems components and maintenance
  • Vehicle wheels and tyres construction and maintenance
  • Vehicle exhausts systems components and maintenance
  • Introduction to low carbon technologies in the automotive industry
  • Vehicle electrical foundation skills
  • Basic vehicle valeting
  • Light vehicle construction
  • Removing and replacing light vehicle electrical units and components
  • Removing and replacing light vehicle chassis units and components
  • Inspection, repair and replacement of high performance light vehicle tyres
FEES

School Leavers (16-18)

If you will be 16, 17 or 18 years old on 31 August before your course starts, and you have the legal right to live in the UK for the full length of your study programme, your course will be free.

Adult Students (19+)

If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August before your course starts, are resident in London, and have the legal right to stay in the UK for at least 12 months, you may be eligible to study for free, depending on your circumstances and chosen course. For more information, please click here.
