GCSE Maths

ABOUT THIS COURSE

If you are studying in the College on Level 2 or Level 3 course then the daytime GCSE maths is for you. Part time students may join by arrangement with the Head of Faculty.

Topics studied at foundation level are:

  • Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Approximations
  • Everyday Mathematics
  • Proportion and Variation
  • Statistics and Probability
  • Graphs
  • Algebra
  • Trigonometry
  • Geometrical Drawing Mensuration
  • Transformations

At higher level, the same mathematics topics are studied further and there are a number of extra topics to be studied. Students on the higher level course will also be required to attend extra workshops.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
  • GCSE Maths at grade 3
  • If you do not have any qualifications you will be asked to take an online assessment.
  • You will be required to attend a College interview.

Students who do not pass the entry test will be able to study functional skills maths or English at the appropriate level instead.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

This course is assessed through homework, class test, midterm test, and mock exams.

Final assessment is an external exam with Edexcel awarding body.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

Successful students may progress to AS Level mathematics or progression onto Level 3 vocational course. GCSE Maths is a requirement for many careers.

GCSE maths is now a mandatory requirement for many Higher Education courses.

Examination entry is dependent on work done throughout the year and the results of tests done in December and April; attendance of 85% is also a requirement for exam entry. The examinations take place in May/June. The exam board is Edexcel and the specification is linear.

 

STUDY METHODS

The course is studied in dedicated mathematics classrooms.
Your mathematics lecturer will guide you through the course each week (2 x 1.5 hrs sessions).
Use of PowerPoint presentation, Group Activities, Computer-Aided interact work, etc.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

GCSEs in English and maths are fully-funded by the UK government, providing you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above (grade C).
