Dr Nick Backstrom is Group Deputy Principal for Curriculum and Quality at East Sussex College Group, a multi-campus further education college rated Good by Ofsted in January 2025. He leads on curriculum strategy, quality improvement, and inclusion across five campuses.

Nick brings deep expertise in FE leadership, having worked extensively on learner inclusion frameworks, skills funding, and institutional quality assurance. He holds a PhD and has a strong interest in how technology — particularly AI — can support better outcomes for learners and more efficient college operations.

Nick also serves on the Connect to Work Oversight Board and the NEZ Board, reflecting his commitment to connecting economic development with meaningful outcomes for learners and communities. He is passionate about the role further education plays in addressing skills gaps, supporting diverse learners, and driving local economic growth.

Nick joined the Board and Curriculum & Quality Committee at West London College in 2025.
