ABOUT THIS COURSE

The Pearson BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (QCF) is a two year part-time teacher training course aimed at teachers who want to teach in further education (FE) colleges. FE education equips students 16 years of age, and older, with valuable skills for the workplace and helps to develop their career opportunities.

Additionally, this course is suitable for new teachers working in other sectors including Adult and Community Education, trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14 – 19 year olds in a vocational setting. It will enable you to become an effective, critical and professional teacher or trainer with well developed knowledge, skills and understanding of your role and the sector you are operating within.

The course consists of units with a minimum number of 120 credits over two years. In year one you will study:

  • Introduction to Teaching and Learning - you will learn about the roles of the teacher and how to plan effective lessons
  • Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training - focused on understanding the learning process and key learning theories
  • Managing behaviour and assessment in education and training will help you develop effective assessment and class management techniques.

In year two you will study:

  • Reflective Practice and Action research - which will help you develop your reflective practice
  • Curriculum Planning - will allow you to devise effective learning programmes
  • Wider Professional Practice - will develop your understanding of the further education sector.

N.B.  The information in the career feed below is generic.  Please be advised that this teacher training course is not suitable for primary education but aimed at teaching in FE/secondary. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need:

  • to have achieved a pass grade A*C/9-4 in GCSE English and maths. We will also accept passed Functional Skills at Level 2 in English and maths, IELTS 5.5 and other equivalent qualifications. We will assess your level of English before you start the course, as it is equivalent to the second year of university degree study, so you must be able to write at an academic degree level
  • to be already working as a teacher or trainer, either in paid or voluntary work, during the course. All teaching must be done at your further education and skills provider, sixth form college, school/academy, public or private training organisation. You are responsible for ensuring that you have a minimum of 100 teaching hours over the two years, with at least 40 hours in the first year.

Additionally, you will need:

  • a work mentor at your place of work to provide subject knowledge guidance and to assess your teaching
  • IT skills for writing assignments and preparing teaching materials
  • an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
ASSESSMENT METHOD

You will be assessed through observations of your teaching practice, reflections on your own and others teaching practice, academic essays, presentations and through a Reflective Journal which maps the two years on the programme. In year one all work is assessed at level 4 and in year 2 the DET is at level 5.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

The course may lead to employment as a qualified teacher or to increased responsibility and promotion within your current role.

Successful completion of the course will allow you to apply for the Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status which will allow you to teach in secondary schools.

For those completing DET at level 5 there may be opportunities to progress to a BA in Education and Professional Training.

  • Input sessions in dedicated training and computer rooms at our Hammersmith site.
  • Flexible delivery means that some sessions will be taking place online.
  • Observations will take place at your place of work.
