Preparing to Work in Schools - Level 1

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This qualification is aimed at a adults who are thinking of working in a school setting. It prepares you for further learning and training whilst helping you to develop an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting. It covers areas such as how to support the well-being of a child or young person and child and young person development.

As part of your studies you will also complete a Level 1 Award in Safeguarding in A Learning Environment. This will provide you with the knowledge and understanding about everyone's right to learn, to be safe and to be respected. You will learn about what makes a safe and secure learning environment that promotes their health and well-being.

This is a knowledge-only qualification - you do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to take this qualification. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

We recommend that you have:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 2 or above, including English and maths
    or
    Functional Skills in English and maths at Entry Level 3

At enrolment, you will have an interview with our course tutors to ensure the course is right for you.
You may also need to complete an initial assessment in English and maths, depending on your grades.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Your assessments are designed to match what you’ve learned. All your work will be marked by your tutors, giving you a chance to show off your skills in real-world situations.

You’ll be graded on a scale of Distinction, Merit, Pass, or Unclassified. This grading system helps you see how well you’re doing and where you can improve.

You’ll build a portfolio of your coursework, showcasing your progress throughout the course. Plus, you’ll get hands-on experience through practical assignments and receive feedback from your tutors.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

After completing this course, you'll be well-prepared for further study in the childcare and teaching industry, such as a study programme at Level 2.

  • Understand schools as organisations
  • Understand how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well
  • Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults

Adult Students (19+)

If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August before your course starts, are resident in London, and have the legal right to stay in the UK for at least 12 months, you may be eligible to study for free, depending on your circumstances and chosen course. For more information, please click here.
