ABOUT THIS COURSE

The OCNLR Level 2 Diploma in Skills for Professions in Digital Industries and Technology is a practical and academically focused qualification designed to prepare learners for progression to an Access to HE Diploma in Computing or a related Level 3 course.

This course develops a solid grounding in key areas of computing, including software development, computer systems, data handling, and digital communication. Learners will also build essential skills in problem-solving, research, and algebra - all of which provide a strong foundation for the academic demands of Access to HE.

All units are internally assessed through coursework and project-based tasks. Learners build a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates their technical understanding, digital capability, and readiness for advanced study. The inclusion of topics such as programming, digital content creation, and data analysis ensures relevance to modern computing contexts, while maths and employability units support academic progression and confidence.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need:

  • Two to four GCSEs grade 3 and above, including English,
    or
  • Functional Skills at Level 1 or above in English
    or
  • a Vocational Level 1 qualification with Functional Skills in English and maths at Level 1.

A genuine interest in computing and digital technologies

A strong commitment to progressing to an Access to HE Diploma in Computing or a related Level 3 qualification.

Applicants will be asked to attend an interview or assessment session to ensure the course is appropriate for their goals and current level.

Learners with relevant prior experience or informal skills in IT may also be considered.

This course is particularly suitable for adult learners (19+) returning to education who are preparing to re-enter academic study and pursue higher education in computing or IT.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Assessment is based on a portfolio of evidence built over the duration of the course. Learners complete a range of tasks that demonstrate their practical abilities, understanding of computing concepts, and readiness for Level 3 study.

Written assignments and structured short answers
Practical projects (e.g. software development, spreadsheet tasks, web content creation)
Annotated screenshots and digital artefacts
Problem-solving tasks, including mathematical elements
Reflective journals and personal planning documents

Each unit is assessed against set learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

To achieve the qualification, learners must complete 26 credits in total, at least 12 credits from Group 1 (Digital Skills), up to 6 credits from Group 2 or Group 3 (Employability or Green units)

All assessment evidence is:

  • Internally assessed by tutors Internally moderated within the centre
  • Externally quality assured by OCN London Assessment is continuous, and learners receive regular feedback to support improvement and ensure they meet the standards required for progression to an Access to HE Diploma in Computing.

Units covered can include:

Classroom-based instruction - led by subject specialists, covering theoretical content and core computing concepts.

Practical workshops - focused on hands-on skills such as programming, website development, and data analysis.

Project-based learning - applied tasks that mirror real-world scenarios, encouraging independent thinking and problem-solving.

Individual portfolio development - learners compile evidence of their skills and knowledge through written reports, annotated screenshots, code samples, and evaluations.

Guided self-study and research - supporting the development of independent learning skills essential for success at Level 3.

Group discussions and presentations - to build confidence, communication, and collaboration skills in a supportive environment.

All study methods are designed to encourage active participation, reinforce subject knowledge, and prepare learners for the academic rigour of Access to HE.
