The aim of this qualification is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of babies and young children from birth to seven years of age with applied knowledge in the early years, 0–5 years.
The qualification content meets the Department for Education’s (DfE) Level 2 full and relevant criteria for a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner in the workforce.
In addition to your childcare studies you will study English and Maths if you do not have these qualifications at Grade C/4 and above. This does not apply if you are aged 19+, however, it is strongly recommended that you undertake an assessment in these areas and enrol where possible.
This is a 1 year course: Up to three days in college and a minimum of two days in placement. You will also complete block week placements to meet the requirements of the qualification.
You will study units such as:
- Roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner
- Health and safety of babies and young children in the early years
- Equality, diversity and inclusive practice in Early Years Settings
You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement in a real work environment (RWE) to show competence in both knowledge and skills for a minimum of 250 placement hours whilst undertaking this qualification.
You will need four GCSEs with English Language at Grade 3 and will also have to pass a written assessment.
By exception you may be considered if you have completed a Level 1 Childcare qualification and are able to pass a written assessment at Level 2.
On final acceptance onto the course you must apply for a valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as required by law for all people working with children.
You will be assessed through written assignments and practical assessments which are submitted in a portfolio.
Upon successful completion of this qualification, you can enter the workforce as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner or continue to study for a Level 3 Early Years Educator status.
You will learn in dedicated classrooms and a range of childcare settings when on work experience placements.
If you will be aged 16 to 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your studies and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course will be free.
